Surprising result of Dutch elections

While it was to be expected that the elections would bring quite a few changes, many had not thought that the PVV would become the largest party. Pieter Omzigt's newcomer NSC also gained a hefty number of seats. The old ruling parties were all punished considerably by voters.

Voters want a different policy, and if we read the results carefully, we see that the Netherlands wants a more right-wing policy. Because even the combination Green Left and Labour Party in combination with other left-leaning parties cannot form a cabinet.

Themes

Key issues are migration and the climate policy to be pursued. The newly formed cabinet will take a different course. It is to be hoped that a new cabinet will be formed soon. The Netherlands is facing a mild recession and important decisions are needed to get the economy back on the rise.

Tricky

The large number of parties does make it difficult to form a government, there is increasing fragmentation and we see parties coming and going quickly. A higher electoral threshold would perhaps be a solution. Another extreme is the situation in the United States where you can only choose between Republicans and Democrats. That again leads to enormous polarisation and that is not desirable either.

Netherlands polderland

The beauty in the Netherlands, then, is the polder model. In the end, we come back to a compromise, taking into account multiple views and opinions. As a result, we see that the Netherlands has been politically stable in recent years and our economy is one of the most solid economies in the world.
